T-Mobile makes first LTE cities official

T-Mobile

T-Mobile today took the wraps off its long-awaited LTE network, launching in seven metro areas. There are three Android smartphones that will take advantage of the higher-speed 4G data. They are the Samsung Galaxy S4, Note 2, and the HTC One. (BlackBerry's Z10 also rocks T-Mobile LTE.) The Galaxy Note 2 is available now; the HTC One and Galaxy S4 are expected in April.

The seven cities in which T-Mobile now has LTE data are:

  • Baltimore
  • Houston
  • Kansas City
  • Las Vegas
  • Phoenix
  • San Jose, Calif.
  • Washington, D.C.

That's just the start, of course. T-Mobile didn't announce any future plans, but says it expects to "reach" 100 million people in the U.S. by mid-year, and 200 million by 2014. Those are potential subscribers, meaning more LTE-enabled cities.

10 Things We Wish Ryan Gosling Would Say to Us

Now that The Place Beyond the Pines is hitting theaters, we're gearing up for some quality time with our boyfriend Ryan Gosling. (Okay, fine, he's not our boyfriend, but as soon as Eva Mendes is done with him, we call dibs.) Though he's threatened to take a break from acting -- say it ain't so! -- he's given us plenty of magical moments to re-watch over and over.

Peres: Israel, Turkey have 'a thousand reasons' to be friends

ISTANBUL (AFP) -- Israel and Turkey have "a thousand reasons" to be on friendly terms again following an air-clearing apology over the deaths of nine Turks in a 2010 raid on a Gaza-bound flotilla, Israeli President Shimon Peres said on Turkish television Sunday.

"I can think of a thousand reasons why Turkey and Israel should be friends; I cannot find one reason why they shouldn't be friends," Peres said in an interview with CNN Turk.

The diplomatic rift between the two former allies was sparked by the raid by Israeli commandos on the aid ship heading to the Gaza Strip. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin apologized on Friday to Turkish leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan for what Peres called a "misunderstanding".

"I think somehow both countries wanted to put an end to this misunderstanding and return to the good relations that have existed between Turkey and ourselves for many good years," he said.

Peres said both nations, which will now resume full diplomatic ties, were united in their concerns over the possible use of chemical weapons in Syria.

"Unluckily the chemical arsenal remains. It is a danger to the people of Syria, to Lebanon, to the whole world. Everyone feels uneasy. It's not a simple problem. Turkey, being a leading force in the region, is worried like we are."

Asked whether he would soon be able to make up with Turkish President Abdullah Gul, Peres replied: "It can happen soon. I mean, we never interrupted the relations with Turkey."

While Erdogan welcomed the apology, the move has been criticized by Hamas and Israel's former foreign minister Avigdor Lieberman.

Arguments in the home linked with babies' brain functioning

Mar. 25, 2013 ? Being exposed to arguments between parents is associated with the way babies' brains process emotional tone of voice, according to a new study to be published in Psychological Science, a journal of the Association for Psychological Science.

The study, conducted by graduate student Alice Graham with her advisors Phil Fisher and Jennifer Pfeifer of the University of Oregon, found that infants respond to angry tone of voice, even when they're asleep.

Babies' brains are highly plastic, allowing them to develop in response to the environments and encounters they experience. But this plasticity comes with a certain degree of vulnerability -- research has shown that severe stress, such as maltreatment or institutionalization, can have a significant, negative impact on child development.

Graham and colleagues wondered what the impact of more moderate stressors might be.

"We were interested in whether a common source of early stress in children's lives -- conflict between parents -- is associated with how infants' brains function," says Graham.

Graham and colleagues decided to take advantage of recent developments in fMRI scanning with infants to answer this question.

Twenty infants, ranging in age from 6 to 12 months, came into the lab at their regular bedtime. While they were asleep in the scanner, the infants were presented with nonsense sentences spoken in very angry, mildly angry, happy, and neutral tones of voice by a male adult.

"Even during sleep, infants showed distinct patterns of brain activity depending on the emotional tone of voice we presented," says Graham.

The researchers found that infants from high conflict homes showed greater reactivity to very angry tone of voice in brain areas linked to stress and emotion regulation, such as the anterior cingulate cortex, caudate, thalamus, and hypothalamus.

Previous research with animals has shown that these brain areas play an important role in the impact of early life stress on development -- the results of this new study suggest that the same might be true for human infants.

According to Graham and colleagues, these findings show that babies are not oblivious to their parents' conflicts, and exposure to these conflicts may influence the way babies' brains process emotion and stress.

Windows Blue screenshot tour

Windows Blue screenshot tour

We probably don't need to tell you that one of the first things we did upon finding out that Windows Blue had leaked was download that sucker. (Sorry Microsoft, we can't help ourselves.) Well, after some finagling we got it up and running in a virtual machine and gave spin. Even at this early stage its pretty obvious that Blue is going to be a relatively minor, but welcome upgrade Windows 8. And, while we encountered plenty of rough edges, we'd say they're more than explained away by the fact that this is an early build and VirtualBox can introduce its own set of problems. But, if you're just looking for a sneak peak at what Microsoft has in store for Windows in 2013, head on after break and check out the gallery of screenshots below.
