Provisional figures released by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) on workplace ill health and injury between April 2011 and March 2012 have revealed slight falls in a number of key areas.

  • Major injuries to employees (e.g. amputations, fractures and burns): numbers fell slightly to 89.9 injuries per 100,000 workers compared with a rate of 99.9 in per 100,000 workers in the previous year (2010/2011).
  • Illnesses caused or made worse by work: the figures showed a reduction in this number from 1.2 million in 2010/11.
  • Fatal injuries: down to 173 from 175 the previous year. The industry sector reporting the most fatal injuries continues to be the construction industry (171.8 major injuries per 100,000 employees) although this represents a slight reduction in the number of deaths from the previous year.
  • Injuries reportable under RIDDOR: there was a reduction of 3% in injuries reportable under the Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations (RIDDOR) on the previous 12-month period. The recent change to RIDDOR (reported on in our blog in April 2012) will not affect the published statistics until autumn 2013.

These provisional figures will be finalised in July 2013 following any necessary adjustments arising from investigations, in which new facts can emerge about whether accident/illnesses were indeed work-related.

Interestingly, however, despite falls in these work health and injury figures, the number of working days lost due to illness and injury increased slightly during 2011/2012 (27 million working days were lost in 2011/12 compared with 26.4 million working days in 2010/2011).

Clearly efforts to keep employees healthy and present at work need to continue in order to tackle the on-going issue of employee sickness absence. Let the Health for Work Adviceline help!
