Riverside County GOP registration surge raises questions of fraud

SACRAMENTO ? Aggressive recruitment efforts in one of California's most hotly contested voting districts has created a surge of newly minted Republicans like Marleny Reyes. Except she had no intention of joining the GOP.

The Moreno Valley College student is among scores of voters in Riverside County who say they were duped.

Formal complaints filed with the state by at least 133 residents of a state Senate district there say they were added to GOP rolls without their knowledge, calling into question the party's boast that Republican membership has rocketed 23% in the battleground area.

More than 27,700 residents of the legislative district have become Republicans since January, according to the California secretary of state's office ? erasing a registration edge long held by Democrats.

The complaints have also shined a light on the political committee behind the registration drive, Golden State Voter Participation Project, and its biggest donor, wealthy GOP activist Charles Munger Jr. Other donors include the California Apartment Assn., Farmers Group Inc. and Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturing of America.

The problem has also raised anew the question of whether the state should ban firms that pay workers for each voter they register or signature they secure on a petition rather than paying them an hourly rate. Workers have an incentive to cut corners under such arrangements, according to Assemblyman Richard Pan (D-Natomas), who has proposed barring the practice in a bill that is on the governor's desk.

Democrats say bogus registrations are more than just an issue of workers trying to make an extra buck ? that they're a trick to prevent the Democratic party from getting supporters to the polls as well as to draw more money to the area's Republican races. A statewide Democratic group gathered the complaints and filed them with the secretary of state's investigators.

A local Democratic group, the Riverside County Progressive Political Action Committee, alleged in a letter to county officials that the GOP registration drive there was "an overt and pervasive voter registration fraud effort."

Many of those who were registered said they signed documents they thought were petitions for ballot measures to legalize marijuana or create jobs in California. Reyes said she was told that for her signature to be counted she would also have to fill out a registration form.

She did so, without checking a box for a political party because she was already registered as a Democrat. She was surprised to receive a notice in the mail later saying she had been registered as a Republican.

"It's really disturbing," said the 20-year-old criminal justice major, who has since re-registered as a Democrat.

The controversy has spilled into the Senate race between Assemblyman Jeff Miller (R-Corona) and Democratic candidate Richard Roth, an attorney. The district they're battling for is one of four that both major parties believe could help Democrats win a supermajority in the upper house.

Democrats have cited the voter complaints in criticizing Miller, who has touted the registration surge as "a reflection of the hard work my campaign has put into communicating with voters."

Democrats were 39.7% of the 31st Senate District's registered voters in January, and Republicans 36.6%. State figures show that in September, Republicans had overtaken Democrats by 543 voters. Each party now has roughly 39% of the registration.

The card used to register Reyes as a Republican was issued by the Riverside County registrar to Elisa Muchmore of Iolite Consulting, a Riverside firm, according to county documents. Muchmore, Iolite's managing partner, said she gave the cards she received from the county to the subcontractors who register people. She said she was not aware of anyone being registered without their consent.

"We call 90% of them," Muchmore said of the registrants, to verify that the sign-ups are legitimate. Some people do not put their phone numbers on the documents they sign or return messages, but none of those she reached had any complaints, she said.

The workers who are paid to register people undergo training on the proper procedures, she said. "We try to do absolutely everything to ensure the process is legal and that we don't disenfranchise any voters," she said.

Iolite Consulting was hired for $101,000 by West Coast Campaign Management, which oversaw the GOP registration drive in the county. West Coast Campaign Management was paid $400,000 for the job by the Golden State Voter Project. Munger contributed $241,000 to that group.

Munger, whose sister Molly Munger sponsored Proposition 38 on the Nov. 6 ballot in an effort to raises taxes for schools, did not return calls for comment. But a spokeswoman for the Golden State Voter Project said the group was not aware of any allegations of impropriety until they were reported in the media. The group does not tolerate misconduct, said spokeswoman Ashley Giovannettone.

She said that if wrongdoing is found, "we will work with the appropriate officials to prosecute those responsible to the full extent of the law. We have very strict checks in place to make sure the voter's intent is carried out."

West Coast Campaign Management hired several firms ? not just Iolite ? that in turn paid dozens of individuals to register people. Records obtained by The Times show that registration forms cited in several complaints were issued by elections officials to workers and firms who were part of the Golden State group's registration drive.

Colleen Jacobs was surprised to find herself registered as a Republican shortly after she signed some petitions outside a Sam's Club in Riverside.

"I signed the petitions, and then the next thing I know, I got something in the mail saying I'm a Republican," said Jacobs, a Moreno Valley homemaker who had been a Democrat since 1997. "I thought it was a mistake. It's crazy." She has since re-registered as a Democrat.

Last year, the California secretary of state's office investigated 100 cases of alleged voter fraud, including some involving registrations. Thirteen were sent to prosecutors, and one resulted in a conviction, said Shannan Velayas, spokeswoman for the state agency.

Velayas declined to comment on the Riverside County complaints.

Judge Lucy Koh To Review Galaxy Tab 10.1 Injunction

Posted by Abhijoy Sarkar

There are never ending twist and turns going on in regards to the Apple vs Samsung court battle. It is a well know fact that after extensive hours of review and deliberation the jury came to the conclusion that Samsung not only violated numerous Apple patents, but also Apple has not infringed any of Samsung?s patents. Therefore, had ordered Samsung to pay Apple a sum of $1.05 billion. However, it looks that the battle didn?t end there and Judge Lucy Koh has set 6th December for hearing on Apple?s injunction on 8 Samsung devices.

According to recent reports, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit has granted Samsung?s request to have the injunction of the Galaxy Tab 10.1 remanded in order for the trial court to re-consider Samsung?s motion to terminate the injunction. This will allow Samsung to get additional time to produce a better argument in front of the jury giving reasons as to why the injunction should be lifted, considering the jury found that the Galaxy tab 10.1 was not infringing upon any of Apple?s patents.

Keeping in mind all these matters, the Appeals court has asked Judge Lucy Koh to set aside another date to hear Samsung?s part of the story and let Samsung provide explanation against the injunction.

Bradley-Mickelson win in record fashion

MEDINAH, Ill. (AP) ? Keegan Bradley and Phil Mickelson have won again, and this time they did it in record fashion.

The Americans beat Lee Westwood and Luke Donald 7 and 6 on Saturday, matching the Ryder Cup record for most lopsided finish in an 18-hole team match. It had happened twice before, most recently in 1991, both times in foursomes.

Bradley is now 3-0, the best start in the Ryder Cup for a U.S. rookie since that guy he was playing with did it in 1995. And it handed Donald his second straight loss in foursomes after going unbeaten his first six times out.

The Americans lead Europe 6-3, and are up in two other matches.

Safeguards Available If You Fear Downpayments for Home ...

? Ventilation is Key to a Good Roof

Occasionally I run into a customer who is afraid of giving a downpayment for work that they want done. They may have been burned in the past or just don?t trust themselves enough to have adequately checked out a business. If, for any reason, you do not trust the person who is trying to sell you something, do not do business with them. If you do trust them but still have reservations you can check out their online profile, or simply use a credit card.

Credit Cards: Many companies will now accept credit cards. You may have to pay the 3% processing fee, but if your contractor chooses not to show up to install your replacement windows or whatever product you are having installed, you can simply call your credit card company and tell them you never received the service promised. Most credit companies will remove the charge for up to 90 days after the card has been charged.

Online Profile: Several free websites such as Google and Yelp allow homeowners to comment and rate companies. Check them out BEFORE they come to your home. It is fair to ask the owner of a company for their full name as well. In Wisconsin, you can search circuit court records online to check them out, but be careful ? sometimes you can confuse someone who has the same or similar name but if you look closely you will notice they have a different birthdate, address, or middle initial. Today, nearly everyone has something in there. Even the author of this article has a ticket for not wearing his seat belt and driving a bit fast.

Better Business Bureau: The Better Business Bureau, sometimes just called the BBB, is available both online and over the phone to answer any questions that you have about a business. Their site is a bit tricky though so you have to know what to look for. Ratings are important, but even the absolute best company may have a maximum rating for A- until they meet the requirements of the BBB. Obviously if a company is only rated C or less, it should serve as a red flag, but you should also look at the amount of complaints a company has had. Is it spotless? Is there online one or two or has the company shown a pattern of poor service, poor products and poor judgement? Also check to see if customers have reviewed them. Are they positive, neutral or negative reviews? Sometimes the BBB will rate a company A+ even though they have had multiple issues with products and service. Be smart about using their website and look past just the rating.

Angie?s List: This is a tricky one. Angie?s list is paid for by the consumer which means if you want their ratings you have to pay for it. It sounds like it could be a decent service, but someone could easily buy subscriptions for their friends and relatives to artificially pump up their online ratings. If you use Angie?s list, use it in conjunction with other online rating places.

Gut Check: This may seem obvious, but if something just doesn?t feel right, that is reason enough not to move forward. Some people call it a ?spidey-sense? that is ?tingling? as if to warn them. But what it really boils down to is whether or not you feel your instincts are telling you that this is the right contractor or not.

So what is the right amount to put down? Many contractors require half down. Higher cost contractors often only require 1/3 down because their profits are higher. Often times you will find that the 1/2 a smaller contractor will require will be the same amount of money that the 1/3 was for a larger contractor. A good rule of thumb though is to never pay that second half until the work has been completed according to what has been written on the contract.

Why do contractors require down payments? They do this because they need to cover their materials and some of the costs of doing business. If they order products for your home and then show up on the day of install and the customer either isn?t home or refuses to let them install the product, then the contractor is not only out what they paid for the product, but they also will have to pay a restocking fee from their supplier and that is IF they allow product returns, plus they?ve lost transportation costs, delivery costs and have idled their work crew (which still needs to be paid) for the day.

Essential Tips for Holistic Weight Loss | Health and Fitness

A holistic weight loss program is based on overall body wellness. It concerns itself with natural health solutions instead of diet pills or crash diets. It may take longer to lose pounds this way, but they are more likely to stay off for good.

Many of the guidelines for this type of diet program are similar to those for biblical health. Simple healthy living, such as cutting down on sugar and fats and exercising regularly, goes a long way towards helping you achieve results.

A technique called visualization also works. Overweight people often have a negative self image. Instead visualize the new slim you and how you want to look. Focus on this positive image while exercising or when tempted to grab a sugary snack.

Often people overeat as an escape mechanism. They reach for comfort foods when they are depressed. Instead, try taking a brisk walk or adapting a regular exercise regime. Exercise done before breakfast is especially beneficial because it burns stored calories, rather than calories from a recently digested meal.

Drinking plenty of water on a daily basis is also recommended. Some doctors also suggest drinking warm water which helps dissolve fats. Best to drink pure water without anything added to it.

Eating greens every day is also helpful. Greens contain many vitamins, minerals and phytochemicals which nourish the body. Malnourishment is the cause of sugar cravings and food binges. Vegetables also contain fiber and bulk which help to flush out the body systems. By eating a variety of greens, such as romaine lettuce, kale, spinach, and bok choy, you are guaranteed slimming success.

Natural health solutions for dieting include planning meals well. Make lunch your most important meal of the day. Noon is when the most demands are made on your body, and that means the need for good nutrition. Breakfast should be substantial, consisting of protein and whole grain bread or cereal. Taper down for dinner with just soup and leafy greens.

Avoid processed foods as much as possible. Some people call this the Palaeolithic diet but it is true. The body does work best on whole grains and foods that are in as natural a state as possible, including fruits nuts. Fruit juices are overly processed and contain extra sweeteners that add calories, so avoid these as well.

Following a holistic weight loss plan will help you get the results you want. Natural health solutions may take longer but the results are permanent. They will also give you radiant skin and an overall healthy glow.

One Direction: Young and living it up

(AP) ? One Direction's latest single sums it up: "Live While We're Young."

The members of the British pop group say they are happy to have that first track off their second album as a motto ? and admit they're making the most of being young, successful and popular.

"We're working a lot, so when we're not, it's nice to have fun and enjoy yourself," singer Harry Styles, 18, said in an interview Wednesday. "It's important."

He was accompanied by band mates Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson, Zayn Malik and Liam Payne ? and they're all quick to laugh at themselves and each other.

These five names are known around the globe since their debut album, "Up All Night," became a No. 1 smash worldwide earlier this year.

So who they date and where they go is heavily reported, especially by the British press. But Tomlinson, 20, says they don't mind being trailed by the paparazzi.

"If we go out on a night out and we're a little bit drunk, it's not obviously going to be a great picture, but it's not too bad," he said. "The fact is we're young ? everyone who is our age is going out."

Tomlinson added that "everyone complains about paps (paparazzi), but we always have a laugh with them, to be honest."

They enjoyed shooting the video for the single "Live While We're Young," which is out in the U.K. on Sept. 30.

Fans were quick to chat about the bare-chested scenes that Horan did but he shrugged off the sex idol comments, saying he was just warm, not showing off.

And the band members had a laugh and worked up a sweat trying zorbing ? running around in giant plastic balls like hamsters.

If there's anything controversial about the sound of their feel-good new single, it's that the start of the song is similar to The Clash's "Should I Stay Or Should I Go."

"It's a bit like the first single ("What Makes You Beautiful") where the opening riff sounds similar to a certain film ("Summer Nights" from "Grease")," explains Styles. "It's kind of on purpose though, it's a great riff."

Their sophomore album, "Take Me Home," will be released Nov. 12 and 13 in the U.K. and the United States.

Despite joking that they've got rapping and choirs involved this time around, the guys admit that fans can expect more of their same catchy pop style.

"There aren't too many surprises," Styles said. "We're just really happy with how the album's come out. We all agree that it's better than the first one ... we're proud of it."

"In the least arrogant way," Tomlinson made sure to add.

He then pondered why.

"We're a better band. We're closer as friends, we've got better vocally, it's all experience," he said.

Why does the legal environment matter for women's access to capital?

When asked about what she thought was key in advancing women?s rights, Cherie Blair, lawyer and founder of the Cherie Blair Foundation for Women, replied, ?I believe that actually financial independence is very important so we need a financial framework that recognizes women as equals, that enables them to have access to finance, access to capital to have their own financial independence.?? For women in the developing world, property rights can be a factor in getting access to finance. (Credit: World Bank Photos)

And this brings to the table another question: What are the hurdles that women face when trying to access capital?

For many women entrepreneurs across the world, getting a loan to start or expand their business can prove challenging. This is particularly true in the developing world where banks often require borrowers to pledge their home or land as collateral. Women, who tend to lack such assets, are placed at a disadvantage. Legal restrictions on women?s property rights can exacerbate the problem.

The first hurdle: meeting the bank?s conditions
???
Mapping the Legal Gender Gap in Using Property and Building Credit is the latest note published by the World Bank Group?s Women, Business and the Law? project. Through this analysis, we explore how women?s access to capital can improve when their property rights are recognized.

This note suggests that legal restrictions on women?s capacity to own, sell, acquire and use property affect their ability to meet banks? collateral requirements and to access capital. These restrictions can impede women from getting the financial resources necessary to start and run their businesses.?

Our analysis also reveals that women borrow less from financial institutions in economies with a legal gender gap in property rights. On average, there are 9 percentage points fewer women with loans in economies where women do not have the same property rights as men.

More Women Have Loans in Economies that Grant Women the Same Property Rights as Men
Sources: Women, Business and the Law 2012 and Global Financial Inclusion (Global Findex) Database. Note: The figure includes data on 132 economies and presents an average value.

So where are property rights different for men and women?

Data from Women, Business and the Law?s Using Property indicator show that none of the 141 economies covered differentiate between the property ownership and management rights of unmarried women and unmarried men. However, we find that some economies do have different property ownership and management rights for married women and married men.

Our research reveals that all economies in high-income OECD, Eastern Europe and Central Asia, Middle East and North Africa and South Asia grant equal rights to spouses with regard to property ownership. In East Asia and the Pacific all economies do so, except the Philippines, where the husband?s decision legally prevails in cases of disagreement between the spouses over the use of marital property.?

In Latin America and the Caribbean, we find that spouses have equal property rights in all economies but Chile and Ecuador. In Chile, the husband legally manages marital property?including any property generated in the marriage?and any property brought into the marriage by his wife, limiting her ability to pledge marital property as collateral. In Ecuador, as in the Philippines, the husband?s decision will prevail in the case of a disagreement between the spouses over the use of marital property.

In Sub- Saharan Africa, our findings show that four economies give husbands sole administrative control over marital property: Cameroon, C?te d?Ivoire, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and the Republic of Congo. In these economies, husbands solely manage marital property, and financial institutions require the husband?s approval to use this property as collateral.

Drawing from Women, Business and the Law?s Building Credit indicator, our note also explores how the regulations governing credit reporting and secured transaction systems can help female entrepreneurs access the financing they need.?

The Best Ski Vacation Possible! ? North Kansas City Hotels

by Martin C. Lunden on September 19, 2012

Whistler is one of North America?s most popular winter destinations. Just a short two hour drive from Vancouver gets you to Whistler Village, the top ski destination year after year. It has become an icon in the ski resort industry.

The Longest in the World

Because Whistler and Blackcomb are so enormous, and separated by terrain, skiers used to have to pick a single mountain or the other. Whistler and Blackcomb have a overall of eight,171 skiable acres and a mile of vertical descent, so cruising from top to bottom on possibly mountain normally takes time. But Whistler?s Peak two Peak gondola, a two-mile, eleven-minute horizontal journey that joins the two mountains, allows you to ski on both mountains on a single day. Peak 2 Peak can move 4,100 folks for every hour in its 28-passenger cabins. There are two cabins that have glass bottoms, so if you don?t suffer from vertigo, you should take this amazing ride to see the valley below.

Don?t Worry Parents ? There is Kid Fun!

The Ski and Snowboard College is 1 of the most significant in the planet. It?s a great opportunity to get your youngsters interested in skiing from world class instructors. Children of all ages will adore the facilities such as a Magic Castle on Blackcomb Mountain and hidden Tree Fortin on Whistler Mountain.

Shopping

Shopping around town is varied and impressive with over 200 shops in the Village. A steady influx of tourists ensure that quality remains high and selection is constantly being updated. Outdoor gear is readily available. Sports and recreation shops are scattered throughout the village. They sell everything necessary for a day on the slopes.

Great Dining

If you think you are limited to burgers and beer on the mountain, think again. Whistler has an amazing assortment of dining choices for any palate. Everything is available including hip aprs ski hangouts, sophisticated lounges, upscale restaurants and wild nightclubs. Visitors will find flavours from near and far on offer in Whistler?s varied eateries. Among the cuisines represented are Japanese, Italian cuisine, continental delicacies and regional dishes, as well as delights inspired by the Pacific Northwest.

You Can Party Too!

The Nightlife in whistler is a reason in itself for coming here. There is something for everyone here. Whether you are into live music, the club scene, or a quiet jazz band, Whistler has it. The pubs a great place for relaxing and partying and the food can be fantastic as well. At two in the morning, the nightclubs close. This can be a bit of a shock to tourist who are accustomed to clubs staying open till the early hours of the morning in their home country. Patios usually close at midnight. And bars close at 1am.

We offer Vancouver Airport to Whistler private charters for every group size. Get a quote online or by phone. Or Visit our Vancouver Airport to Whistler video.

Study says people who live in deprived areas see fewer elderly and thus adapt to an environment in which life will be short

Why do people in deprived areas live life in the fast lane? It may be because of the age of people they observe in the street, according to a new study by Daniel Nettle and colleagues from Newcastle University in the UK. Their work suggests that because fewer older people are seen out in the street in deprived neighborhoods, younger generations assume that people die young. As a result, they may be adapting the speed at which they live their lives accordinglyfor example, by having children earlier in life. Nettle and team's work is published online in Springer's journal Human Nature.

The researchers looked at the 'social diet' or the daily distribution of types of people to whom one is exposed in two neighborhoods in Newcastle. One neighborhood was affluent, the other was poor. They walked through the main streets of both neighborhoods six times, recording the estimated ages of every man, woman, and child they passed. They then compared their recordings with census data, to establish how closely what people witness in the street reflects the actual age distribution of the population in these two neighborhoods.

They found that in the affluent neighborhood, more people over the age of 40 and over 60 in particular were seen than in the deprived area. In contrast, more young adults were observed on the streets in the poor neighborhood. However, this was not an accurate picture of the actual age distribution of residents in the two neighborhoods. In reality, more residents over 60 were living in the deprived area than in the affluent one. The authors comment that this discrepancy between what people see and the reality of who lives where is not a reflection of the different age profiles of people who live there, but rather of differences in the ways in which residents use the streets.

The authors conclude: "Chronic exposure to a world where there are many visible young adults and few visible old ones may activate psychological mechanisms that produce fast life-history strategies."

3 Article Reviews About Wall Scissor Move ... - Health & Fitness News

The Wall Scissor Move

Do you hate sit-up because of its level of difficulty? Well, an article in Glamour has the easy alternative that can also work out your abdominal muscles.

The article suggests you do the ?wall scissor? move as part of your daily workout for your abs. In addition, it also targets your butt and thigh muscles. This is a very easy to do exercise that will surely help you burn out fats.

The first thing to do is to lie down and form your body in a diagonal patter facing the wall. You can do this by bending your knees touching the wall and keeping your shoulder blades, upper arms, and head on the floor. Once you have successfully performed the diagonal position with feet on the wall, lower your left leg in a direction towards your head and leave the right feet touched on the wall. Make sure to keep both legs straight and abs right. When done with left leg, switch to your right leg. Like all exercises, this is in repetition basis.

To see a picture of this exercise form, just go to Your Fitness: Do This Easy Thigh-Slimming Move in Front of the TV Tonight.

The Brilliance of Pilates

In this article review, I will feature Maria of Lululemon and her story about how Pilates has healed her back pain.

Maria works as an aerobic fitness instructor. She has been attending to aerobic classes since she was 15 years old. Despite the benefits of fitness she gets from aerobic exercises, Maria still experiences an irritating pain in the back. But when she tried and later on mastered the art of Pilates as an exercise, all the pain that she felt for a long time has gone away.

Because of Pilates, Maria learned more about the value of proper body and alignment. She also learned that Pilates is all about the principles of breathing, neutral pelvis, scapular stabilization, ribcage placement, and cervical alignment. To spread the knowledge and principle, Maria is currently conducting Pilates sessions to her students.

Solo Time: Bad or Good?

I?ve found some valuable information in an article in Greatist talking about the effects of having time alone.

Kelly Fitzpatrick, author of the article, mentioned that solo time is a very difficult concept to grasp. Some researchers indicated that solo time can boost productivity and make romantic relationships even stronger. They say that people working in private can generate more brilliant ideas compared to group discussion or brain storming. However, it is also good to have a combination of both.

Moreover, researchers have also mentioned that solo time is very crucial in relationships. All men and women needs some time and space to get to know their selves and stimulate inner peace and spirituality.

On the other hand, some researchers say that solo time can only lead to loneliness. And loneliness can trigger bad health risks. It is indicated that people who spends more time being alone are more prone to the risks of having worse sleep habits, higher blood pressure, and weaker immune systems compared to those people who live with regular face to face communication with their family and friends.

However, Kelly mentioned that the effects of solo time depend on the type of person. Each person has a different mindset and the following statements above cannot support a clear and solid conclusion.

Giant Super-Magnetic Star Has Scientists Buzzing

The most magnetic massive star seen yet is dragging a giant cloak of trapped charged particles around it.

This newly discovered star, NGC 1624-2, could help shed light on what role the magnetism of stars plays in the evolution of stars and their galaxies.

NGC 1624-2, which lies about 20,000 light-years from Earth in the constellation Perseus, has about 35 times the sun's mass. Its hefty mass gives it plenty of fuel, making it bright and hot and thus likely to burn out relatively quickly after a lifetime of about 5 million years, or one-tenth of 1 percent of the sun's current age at midlife.

This massive star possesses a magnetic field 20,000 times stronger than the sun's and nearly 10 times stronger than that detected around any other high-mass star.

"Magnetic fields of this strength are extremely rare ?? they are only known to exist in a few other stars of much lower mass," study lead author Gregg Wade, an astronomer at the Royal Military College of Canada, told SPACE.com. "To find such a strong field is very lucky." [The Strangest Things in Space]

This powerful magnetic field binds and controls the stellar wind of energetic particles streaming from NGC 1624-2 "to a very large distance from the star ? 11.4 times the star's radius," Wade said. "The huge volume of this magnetosphere is remarkable. It's more than four times wider than that of any other comparable massive star, and in terms of volume it is around 80 times larger."

While NGC 1624-2 is the most magnetic of all known massive stars, a few intermediate-mass stars have magnetic fields maybe twice as strong, Wade said. (Our sun and other stars like it are low-mass stars.)

In addition, as powerful as NGC 1624-2's magnetic field is, it might pale in comparison with that of magnetars? ?? dense remnants of dead stars that are often thought of as the universe's most magnetic objects.

"The magnetic field of NGC 1624-2 is about 20,000 gauss at the star's surface. A typical magnetar might have a field ?on the order of 10 trillion gauss, so the strength of the magnetar's field is much larger ? that is, 500 million times larger," Wade said.

However, "the standard basis for comparison of how 'much' magnetic field is present is the magnetic flux, which is equal to the strength of the magnetic field times the surface area of the star," Wade said. "In that case, the flux of NGC 1624-2 is almost 700 times larger than that of a typical magnetar.

"In other words, if NGC 1624-2 were to suddenly collapse to the size of a magnetar while retaining all of its magnetism, it would have a surface magnetic field of nearly 10,000 trillion gauss. Holy cow!"

The star's magnetic field influences the internal structure of matter within NGC 1624-2, affecting its life from birth to a violent death as a supernova explosion, Wade said. However, the fundamental processes that produce the magnetic fields of massive stars remain poorly understood.

"We need observations of stars like NGC 1624-2 to teach us what's really going on," Wade said.

The star is both distant and surrounded by dust. To study its light in detail, the international team of scientists monitored this star with the immense light-gathering power of the mirror at the Hobby-Eberly Telescope at the University of Texas at Austin's McDonald Observatory. Their observations suggested the star is rotating quite slowly, taking about 160 Earth days to spin once on its axis. In comparison, it takes the sun about 25 days.

"We think that the star is slowed down because it has to drag its wind around ? because the wind is bound to the magnetic field," Wade said. "This is something that has to be tested, but it looks very likely."

The team also measured the strength of star's magnetic field using the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope on Hawaii's Mauna Kea. Specifically, they looked at small variations in the direction of rotation of the electromagnetic waves absorbed or emitted by atoms located in the magnetic field.

"An excess of clockwise-rotating waves indicates a magnetic field pointing towards us, while an excess of counterclockwise-rotating waves indicates a magnetic field pointing away from us," Wade said. "The larger the excess, the larger the magnetic field. These excesses are usually very tiny, requiring many observations or careful processing of the data to tease out the signal. But in the case of NGC 1624-2, it was obvious from our very first observations that a remarkably strong magnetic field was present."

Understanding more about massive stars would yield insights on their galaxies as a whole. The powerful magnetic field of NGC 1624-2 and its effects on its stellar wind "may well have influenced the star's effect on the surrounding cluster and nebula," Wade said. "Magnetism, an essentially invisible phenomenon even to most astronomers, can have extraordinary impact."

"The most important question we seek to answer is: What is the origin of magnetism in massive stars ? where do the fields come from?" Wade said. "We believe this must happen when the stars are very young. It has recently been suggested that stellar collisions and mergers during star formation may be responsible. A major next step is to investigate these early stages of evolution, and in particular to examine the magnetic properties of binary star systems, since these may represent examples of systems that suffered encounters early in their history."

The scientists detailed their findings in the Sept. 11 issue of the journal Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society.

NEW YORK, Sept. 17, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Reportlinker.com announces that a new market research report is available in its catalogue:

New Opportunites for Optical Films in the Display Industry - 2012

http://www.reportlinker.com/p0968954/New-Opportunites-for-Optical-Films-in-the-Display-Industry---2012.html#utm_source=prnewswire&utm_medium=pr&utm_campaign=Consumer_Electronics

SUMMARY

The purpose of this report is to provide a market analysis of the opportunities and challenges for emerging optically functional films used in displays over the next eight years. In this report, we examine the latest products, strategies, and technical developments of the industry.? For example, we identify where new optical film products are likely to help grow addressable markets for different types of displays versus market-dominant LCDs, and where new films for LCDs may help these struggling displays maintain profitability.Note that hard coatings and other coatings designed to improve the durability of the displays are also commonly found on the front surface of most displays, but these coatings are not optically functional and so they are excluded from the analysis in this report. (Of course, they must be as optically transparent as possible, but they do not perform a particular optical function.) ?In addition, this report also includes NanoMarkets' assessments of the strategies of leading or influential firms active in the optically functional coating/film space.? And, as always with NanoMarkets?reports, this report contains granular, eight-year forecasts of optical films and coatings in volume (by area coated) and value terms, broken out by application.End-use display markets covered include LCDs, OLEDs, e-paper displays, and plasma displays, broken out by mobile computing devices (smartphones, tablets, notebooks, etc.), TVs, computer monitors, and others. Optical film/coating products covered include antiglare/antireflection, color/contrast enhancement, privacy films, reflectors, diffusers, prism and brightness enhancement films, reflective polarizers, multifunctional BLU films, and polarizer films.

SMP at Home: A Surprise Party, Part IV | Style Me Pretty

It?s been quite a day! But the reason that we wanted to break apart this particular party is because we want you to see what a fun and creative process planning something special in your own home can be. This was my first grown-up, I can?t believe we hired a chef and actually had rentals in my home, definitely a splurge kind of party but it was so worth it. Sitting in such a warm and familiar spot, all gussied up and glittery, with the people that you love, sharing wine and laughs and a sense of peace?it was just a beautiful time. Thank you so very much to all of the vendors (listed below) who helped to build this celebration, especially Justin Marantz for trapsing all the way here to capture it on camera. We love you. Okay, now that you can see everything together in one spot, I?ll break it down a bit more. Sarah True of True Event was awesome in helping me to think through all of this, refine the design and just be her general amazing self.

The Paper Goods.?I was hugely inspired by Julie Song?s work for her very own wedding featured on Style Me Pretty and when I began conceptualizing this event, my mind was racing with visions of watercolor and art and effortless grace. Julie?s name immediately came to mind. The gracefullness of her watercolor, the modernity of her lettering..it all gave me butterflies so we asked her to create a masterpiece for this event and to say that we were blown away, is the understatement of the century. Julie was exceptional. She took our general concept and came up with a beautiful design, then waterfalled that very vibe down to the hand lettered menus, the fold-out cupcake recipe tags, the amazing bar sign and the gorgeous gilded plate favors. The result was spectacular.

The Flowers.?We wanted the flowers to be French inspired and yet grounded it tradition. We didn?t want too much structure, instead hoping for graceful, easy pieces that suited the intimate environment we were hoping to create, using a collection of pinks, peaches, reds and a deeper hues. Yumiko, of Hana Floral Design ? who is our forever go-to flower genius because she is so inspired, such a breeze to work beside and so thoughtful with her work ? had the idea of using black urns to house the arrangements. Love, love, love the result.

The Decor. For our bar area, we started with the sketch that you saw earlier, then had our newest SMP guru craft do-it-yourself chevron print risers & gorgeous gold leaf coasters (which we have a DIY for tomorrow!). We used a dresser that I have in my home and filled in with pretty flowers and a pop of color through fresh fruit. The gorgeous sign that Julie made was placed on a basic easel that we found at AC Moore and painted gold with this amazing new spray we found.

As for the table, I had a leftover gift certificate to West Elm, which isn?t a bad place to be wildly inspired, so that was my first pit stop. I found these incredible chargers there, filled in the remaining pieces from the china dinnerware set that I already had, and splurged on a new set of gold flatware that will replace my current IKEA brand that I?ve had for a decade. I made absolute sure to only purchase items that I would use in my daily life so the money really was well spent. I found gold hobnail votives on Save on Crafts that finished off the table look.

As a little aside, we had planned to have the entire party outside but rain put a damper on our plans so we moved dinner from outside under the tree, to inside our screened porch. Which actually turned out beautiful and so nice BUT I didn?t get to use these adorable hanging votives that I found on Save on Crafts.

The Food.?For the first time in my life, I hired a chef. I wanted to really enjoy being with my guests and I wanted someone else to be in control in the kitchen. Our menu was inspired by local farms and their offerings and included an amazing collection of foods by Chef Gary Ankin and featured such yummies as seared scallops with a carrot chardonay beurre blanc, pork loin with pickled peach relish and so much more. Gary and his girlfriend, Tammy, made the party run seamlessly and without stress. It was awesome.

The Conversation.?Even though we were all family, I wanted to have a back-up conversation starter on the table, so I printed thoughtful & funny questions on gold paper, then curled them and placed them in two bowls on the table. Judy, our guest of honor, discovered the game and off we went. We ended up going through all of the questions ? which were a combination of thoughtful ?what do you dream for your children? to fun, ?if you had a yacht, what would you name it.? It made for such a fun, laughter & tear filled evening.

The Dessert.?We opted for something inspired by home. Cupcakes. And we chose the ones that made our hearts go pitter patter from last week?s Crush event?Georgetown Cupcakes who graciously delivered 120 cupcakes that were both served and gifted as favors and were promptly devoured in one night. Or close to that at least. We plated a petite selection of our favorites?Salted Caramel, Vanilla with Buttercream, Chocolate Fudge and Red Velvet. I have NO words for how delicious these cupcakes are and we all laughed because each person had a different favorite. They were amazing.

The Favors. We wanted to gift something thoughtful. Because we are of the camp that unless a favor brings something special to the evening, it should be skipped. So we had Julie hand letter some basic white ceramic plates with liquid gold leaf paint. She painted festive sayings like ?celebrate? and ?yum? on each, then tied them with an amazing fold-out card containing a recipe for Salted Caramel Cupcakes. A box of mini cupcakes was also gifted to tie everything together.

Music. We stuck to a simple playlist. Michael Bubble and the soundtrack from Midnight in Paris.

Do ? it ? Yourself. We have two amazing DIY projects coming up tomorrow. So sorry to make you wait but we didn?t want to crowd out the party that really did take center stage. Plus, we wanted an excuse to remind our weekly readers that we?re hear blogging on Sundays so it?s really jut a shameless plug for SMP at Home!

Can?t wait to hear what you think of the party! AND, I would love to hear and see all about the dinner parties that you are throwing at home. Anything you?ve found that makes it easier? Cheaper? Fun? We?d love to know!

Thank you to everyone who made this little dinner party so very special!
