Are You a Sexual Grownup? | World of Psychology

Are You a Sexual Grownup? It can be uncomfortable to talk honestly about our own relationship with sex. It can be uncomfortable to even think honestly about our own relationship with sex.

As result, while many of us have developed into healthy adults in our careers and in our roles as parents or friends, we are stuck when it comes to sex.

Contemplating the idea of entering into our own sexual minds can cause fear and anxiety. There is religious, cultural, and familial judgment and persecution for being direct and honest about sex. There can be fear of facing parts of ourselves that we don?t understand and fear of exposing things about ourselves that feel wrong or shameful. There is understandable reluctance about going back into painful or upsetting sexual experiences from our past.

There is also a natural aversion to looking directly at our own sex lives.

So how can you be more grownup when thinking about your sexuality?

Sex may be a realm where we want to stay somewhat unconscious. We might not want to give up the escape and release from our adult responsibilities. We might believe in the idea that sex should just flow, be natural, and not require thought or work. We might think that there is nothing less sexy than talking honestly about sex.

But if you are interested in a lifetime of healthy sexual energy, thinking and talking about your relationship with sex is enormously fruitful. Like any other aspect of our healthy human development, from physical to intellectual to emotional to spiritual, sexual growth requires attention and work. And, as with the other areas of our development, moving forward sexually means becoming more conscious.

We become more sexually conscious by taking an honest and compassionate look at the full range of our sexual thoughts, feelings, fantasies, and fears. This process often goes slowly as we work to move beyond walls of shame or judgment. We might need professional support to face traumatic past experiences, or to support us to make changes that reflect our increased sexual honesty.

There is a price for becoming sexually conscious, just as there is moving from childhood to adulthood: It can involve a sense of a loss of freedom. As we progress into greater honesty and awareness, we lose the freedom to use sex as a way to escape from ourselves and act out our unconscious issues.

What we get in return is another kind of freedom. We get the freedom from being controlled by psychological patterns that operate largely under the radar of our consciousness and lead us into sexual experiences that don?t fit with the rest of our adult selves. Instead of repeating the same old behaviors, we gain the power to make conscious choices about how to fulfill our needs and desires and the capacity to find satisfaction in sexual experiences that feel whole and right.

So, whether you are in your 20?s or 80?s, single or married, consider the path of sexual growth. Get the support you need to safely look back into your sexual history and to look deeply into your current sexual self. Explore who you are as a sexual being. Try to be objective about the role of alcohol or drugs in your sex life. Be honest with yourself about your relationship with your body.

If you are in a relationship, reflect on what you communicate to your partner through sex, and what you communicate through NOT having sex. Look at how issues around control, self-esteem, and fears of inadequacy play out in your sex life. Begin to talk directly to your partner about your own sexual self, and gently ask questions about your partner?s thoughts and feelings about sex.

These difficult and often awkward steps toward sexual consciousness take great courage, but the payoff can be profound. By freeing ourselves from the prison of our old patterns, we liberate the creativity and intensity of our sexual energy and harness our adult sexual power.

FCC filing reveals Apple TV model A1469 with slightly smaller dimensions

Apple TV clears the FCC,

We don't generally find surprises from Apple in the daily stream of FCC documents and test reports, but a new filing published today seems to suggest that a new Apple TV model of some sort could be on the way. While the diagram pictured above doesn't suggest any major changes to the device's appearance, it does list some slightly smaller measurements: 93.78mm square compared to the 98mm of the current model. That's certainly not the biggest of differences, but the measurements in previous Apple FCC filing have been spot on. The model number, A1469, is also one that we haven't seen before, but the documents unfortunately don't offer much else in the way of details (only confirmation of the same WiFi capabilities as the current-gen Apple TV).

As MacRumors noted yesterday, a look at the download options for the latest Apple TV software update also revealed a new "AppleTV3,2" model, which it speculated could be an international version of the device -- although it of course remains to be seen if it and this model are one in the same. For now, you can get a closer look at the filing yourself at the source link.

Corporations Spur Small-Business Growth - Business Insider

Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are the lifeblood of a country's economy; they are essential to generating good jobs. And those jobs are sorely needed worldwide. Gallup's World Poll estimates that of 3 billion adults globally who report they want a good job -- one that is 30+ hours per week and provides a consistent paycheck in a legitimate business setting of any size -- 1.8 billion, or 60%, are out of work.

Having a large corporation as a customer opens doors to easier credit and other business opportunities.

Some national leaders are beginning to take this problem very seriously. Leaders of countries in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), for example, are putting programs and policy initiatives in place aimed at developing SMEs and encouraging them to compete for government contracts. But too few leaders are focusing on the role that private corporations can play in helping SMEs grow.

In GCC countries, SMEs represent more than 90% of the private sector and employ between 40% and 63% of the private labor force. However, SMEs' contribution to these countries' GDP is less than 40%, primarily because SMEs are concentrated in less profitable, less capital-intensive, and low-tech sectors; they pay lower wages and produce less per employee. But this also suggests that SMEs in the Gulf region have an unrealized potential for growth. If SMEs can grow in revenue and profits, they can create millions of sustainable quality jobs.

Large corporations have a key role to play

To help SMEs realize their potential, large corporations must get involved. Major corporations spend billions of dollars annually seeking products and services from other companies, such as landscaping, cleaning services, logistics, software development, food services, and office supplies. Seven in 10 small businesses increased in revenue and size within two years of becoming part of the corporate supplier base, as shown in a study of nearly 200 small U.S. businesses conducted by the Center for an Urban Future.

When small companies interact with large corporations, these SMEs make changes that improve their organizational structures, management practices, and operations. These changes lead small companies to upgrade their technologies, increase their efficiency, and most importantly, become financially stable. As a result, revenue becomes greater and more consistent, making it possible for these businesses to add new jobs. Having a large corporation as a customer also opens doors to easier credit and other business opportunities. The biggest upside is the spillover of new knowledge, innovation, and business models. When a few small businesses improve their systems or business models, other small businesses learn from that and raise their game to stay competitive, boosting the quality of the entire SME sector.

In some Gulf countries, for instance, large state-owned enterprises, such as Saudi Aramco, Saudi Telecom Company, and Qatar Telecom are already buying services and products from SMEs, thus fostering their growth. In December 2012, the UAE government endorsed a new law that requires government bodies to allocate 5% of their budget for goods and services provided by SMEs or entrepreneurs. This mandate sends a strong message to private corporations about what is required to support business growth in the small-business sector.

The benefits of this relationship extend to large businesses too. Large corporations are beginning to realize that making small businesses part of their supplier base is more than "corporate social responsibility" -- it is good business. Smaller companies are more flexible in providing innovative products and services to meet corporate needs. They are quicker in delivering services locally, which saves on costs. Their knowledge of local markets can be extremely valuable for corporations trying to enter those new markets.

A diverse supplier base also helps establish linkages between the big and small businesses, enabling easier access to resources and creating multiple information sources and a bigger customer base for the corporations. Corporations that restrict themselves to a small network of suppliers are also vulnerable to supply chain disruptions. In 2011, the earthquake in Japan and flooding in Thailand, for example, caused major disruptions in manufacturing activities for Apple, GM, Toyota, Intel, and HP. Diversifying the supplier base by using small businesses is one way to reduce risk in supply systems.

Four ways corporations can help SMEs

Corporations can offer small businesses quick opportunities to grow by buying their services and goods and by taking these four key steps:

Identify and support talent. Not every SME has the capacity to become a supplier. Identify elite performers based on talent and operational readiness. Once large companies have identified these businesses, they can mentor talented entrepreneurs through supplier development programs. Governments also can sponsor programs to boost the management capacity of high-potential SMEs to enhance their growth and competitiveness.

The 114 companies that participated in Gallup's Entrepreneurship Program -- sponsored by state government and a local university -- show how a well-designed program can spur SME growth and create jobs. Highly talented entrepreneurs outperformed their less talented peers by approximately 19 percentage points in year-over-year profit growth. On average, companies in this program grew by 13% in revenue and 57% in profit in one year. This growth led to an average increase of 18% in headcount, creating more than 500 new jobs in a year.

Provide financial help. SMEs need support to meet large corporations' needs. Installing automated invoicing or payment processing systems can be a burden for small companies. A loan from a corporation or a community development institution could help small companies with the capital to scale up their systems, enabling them to accept their first big contract.

Make the procurement process transparent. Acquiring information on large businesses' procurement processes is a hurdle for many small businesses. Corporations that provide a simple website with basic information about goods and services they need and the procurement officer's contact information would help small businesses know where to start.

Simplify the application and selection process. Make the selection process more accessible and straightforward. The IBM-funded website, Supplier-Connection.net, allows small businesses to apply to all participating companies using a single application form, making paperwork less burdensome. The site also helps small businesses collaborate to bid on contracts.

It is not the quantity but the quality of SMEs that will ultimately lead to job creation. The small-business sector is ripe for innovation and growth. Linking it to large corporations' supply chain can be a win-win for everyone involved. This includes SMEs and corporations -- and the governments looking to SMEs as a possible solution to their job-creation needs.

Jumping on board Pinterest - Business Weekly ? ReadingEagle.com ...

The social networking site Pinterest has grown partly due to the popularity of home design photos on its various boards. Baldwin Kitchen & Bath in West Reading uses the site to communicate with customers.

The social networking site Pinterest has grown partly due to the popularity of home design photos on its various boards. Baldwin Kitchen & Bath in West Reading uses the site to communicate with customers.

By Teresa McMinn
Reading Eagle correspondent
Jason Schaedler remembers the time not that long ago when folks who wanted to remodel their home would leaf through magazines and clip pictures of the items they wanted for their project.

Not anymore.

The Internet changed all that, and the latest social media trend is bringing even more change.

Today, many customers use Pinterest to design their home improvement project, said Schaedler, manager of Baldwin Brass Center and Baldwin Kitchen & Bath in West Reading.

Pinterest is a free, virtual bulletin board that allows users to organize and share photos, images and videos. It was launched in 2010 as a social networking service.

Schaedler started using Pinterest for the business about eight months ago, he said. He and a customer could use the site to share photos and kick around ideas.

?It?s made it a lot easier to work with customers over the phone,? he said. ?Home projects have been the hottest trends on (Pinterest) for us.?

Schaedler also pins photos of Baldwin?s new products on the site, he said.

?Social media has been great overall,? he said. ?But Pinterest has been amazing.?

The Greater Reading Convention and Visitors Bureau uses Pinterest to promote local attractions, said Lisa Haggerty, marketing manager for the organization.

The site works well in that capacity because of the way it displays photos, said Carson Kober-Mazurkiewicz, creative development manager with the bureau.

?Some of the best things about Berks County are visual,? she said.

Pinterest also includes the ability to link photos to websites.

?We use it to promote our members,? Kober-Mazurkiewicz said. ?Businesses love it because it?s really free advertising for them.?

Rob Rhoads, director of business development at LaunchDM in Wyomissing, said they recommend clients use Pinterest to leverage their digital marketing efforts.

Some of LaunchDM?s local clients, including Trisha?s Salon and Sweet Street Desserts, are active Pinterest users, he said.

The site allows business pages to showcase and share content, ideas and inspiration with customers online, he said.

As with other forms of social media, businesses should plan how to use Pinterest to reach the maximum amount of customers, he said.

?It should be well thought out,? Rhoads said.

Amy Duggan, who handles social media and communications for the company, said Pinterest?s photo-sharing functionality allows another way for businesses to build an online presence by organizing and displaying a variety of pins and storyboards related to their business products or services.

Businesses also can use the site?s secret storyboard function to communicate internally, she said.

For any business, Pinterest is one of the best ways to establish new relationships, build brand awareness and drive website traffic, Duggan said.

Jennifer Matten, assistant vice president of sales and marketing and national fundraising coordinator for Sweet Street Desserts, said the company started creating Pinterest boards about six months ago as part of its broader social media strategy.

One peek at its Pinterest page shows why: picture after picture of decadent treats, many lovingly photographed and elegantly presented.

?We view our desserts as an art form that arouses all of the senses, and the experience of enjoying dessert most often starts with the visual appeal,? Matten wrote in an email. ?So it provides us with a great platform to share our award-winning photography, introduce our brand to a relevant audience and further enhance the experience that surrounds food.?

Any platform that provides a company the opportunity to engage in ongoing conversation with consumers makes a difference, Matten added.

?Business is social,? she said.

Others said they plan to follow the lead of Baldwin, the visitors bureau and Sweet Street.

?We will be using it,? said Woody Weist, owner of Leesport Farmers Market in Ontelaunee Township.

The business has a Facebook page and website.

Weist said his daughter, Jennifer Wise, uses Pinterest at home and soon will create a page on the site for the market.

?That will be out next social media adventure,? Weist said.

University cafeteria goes trayless to save energy and food

Jan. 29, 2013 ? If you need any evidence of the impact of student research on life at American University's campus, look no further than something that's missing.

Trays.

Following a 2009 study at American University's main dining hall that showed a significant reduction in food waste and dishes used when trays were removed, trays have mostly gone the way of beanies and sock hops.

Now, for the first time, a new paper coauthored by AU professor Kiho Kim and AU environmental studies graduate Stevia Morawski, provides hard evidence of big energy savings as well as a 32 percent reduction in food waste. The article, "Quantifying the Impact of Going Trayless in a University Dining Hall," was published in the Journal of Hunger & Environmental Nutrition.

"Our concern was that all of these other institutions were jumping on the bandwagon in the absence of data," Kim said of the trend of universities tossing out trays. A Washington Post article, for example, reported that other area institutions that have gone trayless include Georgetown, Johns Hopkins, James Madison, and the University of Virginia.

A recent Kansas State University study also showed that students wasted 15 percent less food when they were exposed to slogans such as "All Taste . . . NO WASTE," according to Reuters Health.

"Really the only substantive study people were referring to was this industry study," Kim noted. "We made the argument that you can't entirely trust the industry. The industry studies showed no methodology on how they came up with this number. They simply said, 'We surveyed a bunch of places and they show a 30 percent reduction in food waste.' But how do we know it's a scientifically credible study?"

The original 2009 AU study was a good start in correcting that deficiency, but Kim wanted to tighten up its rigor and methodology. So during six days in February through March 2009, Kim and his environmental science students made dining hall trays selectively and randomly available or unavailable during lunch and dinner. The students collected dishes from the students and weighed food waste.

Results for the 360 diners surveyed, showed that going trayless:

  • Led to a 32 percent reduction in food waste.
  • Resulted in a 27 percent reduction in dish use.

Those findings, Kim and his coauthor noted, suggested that "removing trays is a simple way for universities and other dining facilities to reduce their environmental impact and save money."

Getting Student Buy-In

The original 2009 study followed a failed attempt by food service provider Bon Appetit to institute a trayless policy at AU based on industry figures. The students didn't buy it. So the manager overseeing the Terrace Dining Room approached Kim about conducting a student survey.

Teaming up with Darrell Hayes's School of Communication PR class, which developed a campaign to let students know what was going on, the study was conducted, showing a 30 to 40 percent reduction in waste depending on the meal. This time, without the onus of a top-down solution being imposed on them, students embraced the sustainability implications of eliminating so much waste.

So the class assembled a report and presented it to Bon Appetit, AU's Office of Sustainability, and the Office of Finance and Treasurer. Just like that the trays were gone.

"That link between carrying out scientific studies, making policy recommendations, and those recommendations being accepted so quickly was very gratifying to the students," Kim said, adding that never before or since has he seen such quick results from research.

In his current research paper, Kim noted that each day AU's dining halls serve about 3,200 meals, and that removing trays reduced food waste by 12,000 kg (26,455 pounds) per semester.

Perhaps just as important is the message that having such a real-world impact has on students.

"These opportunities really give them a sense of being able to think about solving problems based on a good set of facts, data that can be collected relatively easily and straightforwardly," Kim said.

"A lot of students think of science as something a small group of people do," Kim said. "But these are things we do not just as scientists but as individuals where we try to understand how the world works. We employ the scientific method in our lives every single day."

Tear Down the Swing Sets

Imagination Playground at Burling Slip, New York, New York. Imagination Playground in New York

Photograph courtesy of Imagination Playground.

In 1888, the psychologist Stanley Hall published a story about a sand pile. A minor classic, it describes how a group of children created a world out of a single load of sand. These children were diligent, they were imaginative, they were remarkably adult.

More than a century later, at the architect David Rockwell?s Imagination Playground in lower Manhattan, small humans scurry back and forth all day long, carrying Rockwell?s oversized blue foam blocks from self-devised task to self-devised task. These children are intent, they are cooperative, they are resourceful. The scene resembles nothing so much as Stanley Hall?s sand pile?with each grain of sand much bigger and much bluer. (Except for the bits of actual sand, that is.)

More than any playground in recent memory, the Imagination Playground has inspired an outburst of excitement. It?s a hit with the hip parents who take their kids to Dan Zanes concerts, and is just as crowded as one. But it also represents something much more mundane: the triumph of loose parts. After a century of creating playgrounds for children, of drilling swing sets and plastic forts into the ground, we have come back to children creating their own playgrounds. Loose parts?sand, water, blocks?are having a moment.

The resurgence of loose parts is an attempt to put the play back in playgrounds. The late 1960s and early 1970s were a time of exuberant playground design, culminating in the great Richard Dattner adventure playgrounds in New York City. Then the grownups got skittish. Down came the merry-go-rounds and the jungle gyms, and in their place, a landscape of legally-insulated, brightly-colored, spongy-floored, hard-plastic structures took root. Today, walking onto a children?s playground is like exiting the interstate: Regardless of where you are, you see the exact same thing.

A lot of people agree that playgrounds are now too boring, and for years there?s been talk about how we should make them more challenging, more risky. But so far, that talk hasn?t turned into more interesting playgrounds. The most adventurous playgrounds tend to be singular projects, often built through fundraising, for the rich. (A genuine exception is this amazing project in Philadelphia.) ?People talk about making playgrounds more risky,? says Susan Solomon, the author of American Playgrounds, which charts their demise. ?But there?s this sense that if you talk about it, that?s enough. There?s this very real reluctance to get involved in anything that might at least potentially cause an injury.?

In Europe, the assumptions are radically different. Even the head of play safety at England?s Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents?a man whom you?d assume would be paranoid about preventing all accidents?has said that ?children should be exposed to a certain degree of risk, not because an activity is risky per se but because it is fun, exciting, and challenging.?

As the psychologist Ellen Sandseter has pointed out, the American attitude is a fundamental miscalculation of the risks: Kids who are bored stay inside and staying inside is ultimately far worse for your health than a broken arm. Talk about why we can?t have nice playgrounds here typically begins and ends with lawsuits. But potential legal action is too easy an excuse for not rethinking playgrounds, says Darell Hammond, head of the play-promoting nonprofit KaBOOM!. Change ?requires all of us doing something different, not just a few law changes.? In short, it requires all of us to be a little less panicked, and honestly, that?s probably too much to ask, at least in the short term. Which is why loose parts may be the best hope for the future of playgrounds right now.

Rockwell?s playground is still an adventure playground?a construction site with all the splintery edges sanded down. It?s what an adventure playground looks like in a risk-averse culture. And it promotes the kind of play we think children should be doing now: not with just their bodies, but with their minds. The Imagination Playground is a much more cognitive vision of the playground. No one would confuse it with a jungle gym.

Now, a Look at the Biggest Real Estate Whales in US History - Curbed

Monday, January 28, 2013, by Rob Bear Photos: bgerman/micechat/wiki

Some may have owned larger tracts of land and built bigger houses, but few figures in American history exemplify the traits of a real estate whale better than publishing baron William Randolph Hearst. This is the guy who built an entire hotel just so his mistress and her friends would have a place to stay, who dreamed up a fantastical compound deep in the woods of Northern California, and who, most famously, devoted much of his time and fortune to the construction of Hearst Castle. Located on a remote stretch of the California coastline, the 90,000-square-foot castle compound was built on a 250,000-acre ranch that Hearst had inherited from his mother in 1919. In that year, he commissioned society architect Julia Morgan to design a personal palace of epic proportions. After almost three decades of construction, the castle contained "56 bedrooms, 61 bathrooms, 19 entertaining rooms, indoor and outdoor tiled swimming pools, tennis courts, a private movie theater, an airfield, the world's largest private zoo, and 127 acres of gardens," plus an untold amount of art and artifacts torn from some of the great homes of Europe. It is a stunning architectural achievement and one that is unlikely to ever be properly replicated.

? Where Hearst was all about spending his fortune on personal extravagances, Standard Oil founding partner Henry Flagler saw a potential for profit in real estate development, particularly in the opening of swampy Florida to deep pocketed winter residents. Flagler founded the city of Palm Beach?where modern day whales now spend many, many millions on grand seaside mansions?and built himself a lavish estate to rival the famous Newport summer "cottages." Known as Whitehall, the 55-room Beaux Arts mansion is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places and operated as a museum, detailing Flagler's legendary exploits. Among them, the construction of a railroad to service the east coast of Florida, the founding of several destination hotels, and the eventual extension of that railway to reach Key West.

BMW and Toyota Lay Out Three Point Advanced Technologies Venture

BMW Series 1 Fuel Cell

BMW Group and Toy?ota Motor Corp. signed bind?ing agree?ments last week on a major green tech?nol?ogy joint ven?ture. To meet?ing their strate?gic tar?get of devel?op?ing advanced tech?nolo?gies to power clean vehi?cles, the two global automak?ers shared a few details on their plan. Fuel cell vehi?cles are play?ing the lead?ing role in the project?

Design?ing com?po?nents for fuel cell vehi?cles ? Toy?ota and BMW say they believe fuel-cell cars will play a key role in the push to elim?i?nate harm?ful auto emis?sions. The cost and size of fuel-cell stacks is com?ing down, while the dri?ving ranges are grow?ing longer. The joint ven?ture between the two com?pa?nies includes devel?op?ment of a fuel-cell vehi?cle sys?tem, includ?ing the fuel cell stack, hydro?gen tank, motor and bat?tery by?2020.

Cre?at?ing light?weight mate?ri?als and tech?nolo?gies ? BMW and Toy?ota have under?taken a fea?si?bil?ity study to define a joint plat?form for a mid-size sports vehi?cle that is to be com?pleted by the end of 2013. They?ll also be explor?ing joint devel?op?ment of light?weight technologies.

Devel?op?ing next-generation lithium bat?ter?ies ? expands the scope of the project a year after the two com?pa?nies agreed to work together on lithium-ion bat?ter?ies. Joint research will be done to develop a lithium-air bat?tery with energy den?sity greatly exceed?ing that of cur?rent lithium-ion batteries.

The grow?ing part?ner?ship between the two automak?ers is bound to inspire other car com?pa?nies to con?sider alliances to pool their resources, said Jeremy Anwyl, CEO of Edmunds.com. ?Fuel-cell cars are a more ele?gant solu?tion, and there?s real progress being made,? Anwyl said. ?This bat?tery issue may be a detour on the way to a fuel-cell future.?

Video: Senate passes $50 billion Sandy aid package

>>> it has been exactly three months since hurricane sandy tore up the east coast , and finally tonight, after a four-week delay, the senate gave final approval to a $50 billion aid package to help the region rebuild. this bill was delayed when the clock ran out. you'll recall at the new year on the legislative session before a vote could be scheduled, which sparked outrage on both sides of the political aisle. tens of thousands of people in new york and new jersey, for starters, are still out of their wrecked homes, or living without adequate heat in the dead of winter.

Marissa Mayer Details Her 3 Goals for Yahoo: More Users, Bigger International Reach And Broader Demographics

photo1Considering the long-standing struggles of Yahoo as a business, its board of directors battles, and Scott Thompson's "ResumeGate", Yahoo (and its investors) have been in sore need of some good news. When beloved Google exec Marissa Mayer took the helm as CEO back in July, finally Yahoo had a cause for optimism. Today, Yahoo released its financial results for Q4 2012, which marked the end of Mayer's second full quarter at the helm and showed that new CEO's efforts to implement a turnaround are truly underway. For starters, the company showed the first signs of progress in that regard, with revenues coming in at $1.22 billion with non-GAAP EPS at 32 cents -- a 4 percent year-over-year increase.

HP web store leaks 14-inch Chromebook Pavilion, to be unveiled on February 17

HP crafting 14inch Chromebook Pavilion, to be unveiled on February 17

Hewlett-Packard didn't have the best 2012, but that's not stopping the US company from getting on the Chromebook bandwagon. The HP Chromebook Pavilion was spotted by Slashgear on HP's own web store, despite the additional information section noting a February 17 "ad embargo" on the information. The little 14-inch Chromebook runs Google's eponymous OS with an Intel Celeron 847 CPU clocked at 1.1GHz, an Intel HD GPU, 2GB of DDR3 SDRAM (expandable up to 4GB), and 16GB of SSD storage space, put to use on the 14-inch HD BrightView LED-backlit display (1366 x 768 resolution). A trio of old-school USB 2.0 slots an HDMI out, and an ethernet jack make up the lion's share of ports, while an SD card slot adds expandable storage options. The 2.55Ah lithium-ion battery included will last up to (approximately) four hours and 15 minutes, though we'd like to put that to the test ourselves before trusting the specs sheet. Of course, it looks like it won't be too long before we hear more and get our hands on the device, given that Feb. 17th date.

American Cancer Society launches annual Daffodil Days campaign ...

?Kimberly Donnelly photo

The American Cancer Society is celebrating the hope of spring with a public launch of its annual Daffodil Days fund-raising campaign.

Daffodil Days offers a bouquet of products:

  • For a $10 gift, donors receive a bouquet of 10 fresh daffodil blossoms.
  • Three mini-daffodil bulbs in a soil-filled pot are available for a $15 donation.
  • A bouquet of 10 daffodils and a Boyd?s collectible stuffed bear is available for a $25 donation.
  • Gift of Hope: Daffodils are delivered to a cancer patient undergoing treatment for a donation of $25 and up.
  • Bear Hugs for Hope: Special edition collectible bear is delivered to a child impacted by cancer; $25.

Flower and product orders may be placed now through March 1 by calling the American Cancer Society at 800-227-2345 or making an online donation at cancer.org/daffodils.

Delivery occurs the week before spring, beginning March 18.

According to the society, this longstanding program, which historically coincides with the coming of spring, is expected to raise more than $500,000 in Connecticut to support the fight against cancer.

Money raised through Daffodil Days enables the American Cancer Society to offer free programs and services that help people fight cancer, and it provides day-to-day help, emotional support, and 24-hour information to help ease the cancer experience.

Additionally, daffodil contributions provide the society with money to fund cancer research, educate people about the importance of cancer prevention and early detection, and advocate for public health policies that benefit the community.

AT&T lost $3.9 billion in Q4 2012, earned $7.3 billion profit for the year

AT&T boasts TKTK results for Q4 2012,

American telecommunications giant AT&T announced its Q4 2012 financial results this afternoon, which reflect $3.9 billion in losses for Ma Bell's final fiscal quarter of last year. However, the company's also posting "record smartphone sales" of 10.2 million last quarter -- "the most by any US carrier," it claims. As it's Q4, the results for the full year are also in; AT&T revealed $7.3 billion in net income across the entirety of 2012. That's what we'd call a marked change from last year's losses.

In terms of phones, AT&T activated 8.6 million new iPhone customers (16 percent of which were totally new to the company), up 1 million over 2011's Q4 and nearly double that of Q3 2012. No specific number is given on Android sign-ups, but AT&T's calling it the "best-ever sales quarter for Android smartphones" -- when those 8.6 million iPhones are subtracted from the overall Q4 2012 sales of phones (10 million), it's not looking so good for non-Apple built devices. On the U-verse front, the latest lifetime subscriber numbers reflect 8 million TV and high-speed internet users, with 192K joining in Q4 2012.

Operating revenues just barely exceeded those of 2011, reaching $127.4 billion, offset by $114.4 billion in expenses (down $3 billion over 2011). Customer numbers also grew in 2012, by a healthy 1.086 million people, the vast majority of which are contract customers (approximately 70 percent). Needless to say, things seem to have gone pretty okay for AT&T in 2012, despite a rocky final quarter. Not too bad for the least loved mobile carrier in the US.

Update: This post originally reflected $3.9 billion in profit for Q4 2012, when it should've reflected losses. Please excuse our error!

Rare 1794 silver dollar auctioned for record $10M

14 hrs.

A 1794 silver dollar, which many experts believe was the first such coin struck by the U.S. Mint, sold for a record $10 million at auction on Thursday.?

The Flowing Hair Silver Dollar more than doubled the previous $4.1 million auction?record for a coin set in 1999, auction house Stack's Bowers Galleries said.?

Legend Numismatics, a rare-coin firm based in New Jersey, bought the coin, which was the highlight of the evening sale in New York that fetched a total of $17.2 million.?

"We felt in our heart that this would be the very first coin to exceed the $10 million barrier in auction and were in fact prepared to bid much high in order to acquire this unique piece of history," the company said in a statement, adding it had no plans to sell the coin in the near future.?

David Bowers, chairman emeritus of Stack's Bowers Galleries, said the coin has unique features that make it particularly valuable.?

"It is the first American metal dollar struck and the finest known. You have these combinations coming together. No museum has an equal piece," he told Reuters.?

The coin was part of the Cardinal Collection, amassed by the collector Martin Logies. Bowers described the collection as the "Old Masters" of coins struck during the earliest years of the U.S. Mint.?

"I think it is extraordinary and I am very pleased that the first silver dollar is the first to top the $10 million threshold," said Logies, who purchased the coin three years ago.?

The $10 million price includes the buyer's commission.?

Like the buoyant art market, which is expecting another good year in 2013, Bowers said coins are a good investment, have a worldwide market and have risen steadily in value.?

"We're continually surprised by surprises," he said, adding there are several million coin collectors around the globe. "They want to collect coins for appreciation, art, rarity and beauty."?

The record-setting coin shows a profile of Miss Liberty facing right surrounded by stars representing each state in the union. The design was only used in 1794 and briefly the following year.?

Another top seller in the sale of 94 lots was the 1792 Half Disme, which dates back to David Rittenhouse, the first director of the U.S. Mint. It fetched $975,000, excluding the 17.5 percent buyer's commission.?

Rats 'eat' part of woman's car

A Suffolk woman returned from a holiday to find rats had eaten through parts of her car causing damage put at ?1,200.

Jill Delaney, 74, from Kentford, said the electrics had gone, rubber was stripped from pedals and the car had to be towed to a garage to be fixed.

A spokesman from her insurance company, Saga, said: "Rats appear to have got into the car and caused... damage."

The company that manages her property and surrounding land said the landlord had called in a pest controller.

I know a rat dropping when I see one?

End Quote Jill Delaney Car owner

Mrs Delaney left her car in the driveway of her rural property while visiting relatives in Cornwall for Christmas.

"The day after I got back - it was 28 December - I tried to open my car and the central locking didn't work," she said.

"Then I saw the rubber on the pedals had been completely shredded and there were rat droppings everywhere.

"I know a rat dropping when I see one."

'Burnt toast'

Mrs Delaney's five-year-old Ford Fusion was towed to a garage in Newmarket and photographs sent to her insurance company.

"It took three weeks to fix because they kept finding more damage," Mrs Delaney said.

Robin Wiley, who has been a pest controller in Cambridgeshire for more than 70 years, said Mrs Delaney's rat problem was not something he had come across before.

"I would expect mice, or even squirrels to cause that kind of damage, but it's not the sort of thing rats would normally do," he said.

However, Mrs Delaney was adamant the damage was caused by rats.

A spokesman from Saga said: "Pictures taken by the garage show the extent of the problem.

"Rats appear to have got into the car and caused ?1,200 worth of damage to the wiring and seatbelt."

Although her landlord is dealing with the rats and debris in barns bordering her tenanted property, Mrs Delaney said she was worried it could happen again.

"I risk my no-claims if I have to go to the insurance company again," she said.

"Pest controllers told me rats hate creosote, so I've filled a cat litter tray with the stuff and put it under the car.

"I've also put out burnt toast because I hear they hate that too," she added.

Brent holds above $113 on promising US, China data

SINGAPORE (Reuters) - Brent crude held above $113 on Friday, on track to post a second week of gains as robust economic data from the United States and China lifted the outlook for fuel demand in the world's two largest oil consumers.

Manufacturing in China and the U.S. grew this month at the quickest pace in about two years, while data suggesting German growth picked up boosted hopes for a swifter euro zone recovery.

Brent crude for March delivery had inched down 5 cents to $113.23 a barrel by 0710 GMT. U.S. crude slipped 17 cents to $96.12.

"Economic statistics from the U.S. and China support an outlook of moderate growth in 2013 against a backdrop of a lower risk environment," said Ric Spooner, chief market analyst at CMC Markets in Sydney.

"Any improvement in industrial demand will help overall oil demand."

Employment in the United States also improved with the number of new claims for jobless benefits dropping to a five-year low last week.

The positive global economic data has boosted investor appetite for riskier assets, buoying global equities and some commodities.

Investors are closely watching the Seaway oil pipeline, after its operator reduced on Wednesday the oil flow rate to the U.S. Gulf Coast from Cushing by more than half, to 175,000 barrels per day.

The 400,000 bpd pipeline is a critical link intended to ease the glut at the WTI contract's delivery point in Cushing, Oklahoma.

Despite the volume cut, front-month U.S. crude prices are on track for a seventh straight week of gains. Trading sources have said the pipeline could be back to full capacity soon.

Its operator Enterprise Products Partners has no timetable for restoring full flows through the pipeline, a company spokesman said.

"Refinery turnarounds, rising production of Canadian oil sands and Bakken shale will compete to keep pipelines congested in the first quarter," said Stephen Schork, editor of The Schork Report, an energy research letter.

The spread between Brent and West Texas Intermediate crude prices held around $17, after widening by nearly $2 on Wednesday.

In weekly inventories data, a larger than expected fall in gasoline stocks lifted RBOB gasoline futures by nearly 1 percent on Wednesday.

U.S. crude stockpiles rose last week as refineries in the country processed less oil, government data from the Energy Information Administration showed.

Crude inventories climbed 2.81 million barrels in the week to January 18, compared with expectations for a 1.8 million barrel rise.

Jaw Pain Disorder Tied to Anxiety, Depression - Health News and ...

January 23, 2013

Hch068ml Jaw Pain Disorder Tied to Anxiety, Depression

WEDNESDAY, Jan. 23 (HealthDay News) ? There?s a link between depression and anxiety symptoms and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder pain, a condition that affects the jaw, according to a new study.

TMJ disorders affect the muscles and joints that connect your lower jaw to the skull.

This study by German researchers included more than 4,000 patients who underwent medical and oral health examinations and TMJ pain assessments, and completed a psychiatric risk factor questionnaire.

The researchers found that depressive symptoms were more strongly related to TMJ pain than to muscle pain, while anxiety symptoms were linked with muscle pain. The findings were published in a recent online issue of The Journal of Pain.

TMJ pain may be a physical symptom of depression or anxiety, according to the researchers. They explained that these mental health conditions could lead to increased activity in the jaw muscles that could cause inflammation and pain.

It?s also possible that chemical imbalances in the brains of people with depression and anxiety could lead to abnormal processing of pain sensation, according to Dr. Stefan Kindler of the department of oral and maxillofacial surgery/plastic surgery at the University of Greifswald and colleagues.

Previous research has suggested a link between depression and TMJ pain, the authors of the new study pointed out in a news release from the American Pain Society. Based on their findings, Kindler?s team concluded that there is a moderate to strong link between depression and anxiety symptoms and TMJ pain.

However, the association between TMJ pain and anxiety and depression does not prove that there is a cause-and-effect relationship.

Egypt to vaccinate after polio found in sewer

CAIRO (AP) ? Egypt will carry out a vaccination campaign for children in parts of Cairo after polio was recently found in the capital's sewage, believed to have been brought to the country from Pakistan, a Health Ministry official said Thursday.

The discovery underlined concerns over the possibility of a spread of polio from Pakistan, one of only three countries in the world where it has not been eradicated. A wild poliovirus was found in samples taken from sewage in the impoverished Cairo districts of Ezbet el-Haggana and Dar el-Salam and it was determined to be related to a strain present in Pakistan, the World Health Organization said.

Egypt was declared polio-free after its last case in May 2004, and the Health Ministry's head of preventative medicine Amr Qandil underlined that no new cases have been found in Egypt.

Qandil told The Associated Press that the ministry will start vaccinating children under 5 in those neighborhoods on Feb. 3. The campaign will be broadened around Cairo in the first week of March.

The virus might have been transmitted from a Pakistani coming to Cairo, or an Egyptian who visited Pakistan and came back with the disease, Qandil said. He added that children coming from countries known to suffer from the virus are vaccinated as they enter Egypt.

The WHO, the U.N. children's organization UNICEF and the Polio Monitoring Cell in Pakistan called the discovery in Egypt "critical and alarming" for the polio eradication program in Pakistan. It said children under 5 departing Pakistan will be given polio drops at airports.

Nine people working on an anti-polio vaccination campaign were shot and killed in Pakistan last month. Islamist militants in Pakistan have opposed the vaccination campaign, claiming the health workers are spies and the vaccine would make children sterile. In response for the killings, immunizations were halted in some areas and the U.N. suspended its field participation everywhere for a period until better security for teams was put in place.

Besides Pakistan, Afghanistan and Nigeria are the only countries where polio remains endemic.
