In her language arts class at Evergreen Middle School, Edington, now 14, heard about the Be Kind to Animals essay contest at the Oregon Humane Society. She immediately thought of Kona, who passed away three years ago.
Edington's parents, Brent and Catherine, got Kona in 1996, two years before their daughter was born. Catherine said Kona and Edington were always together, running around the house and playing games like pirates.
Over the years, Edington said she learned a lot from Kona: lessons of patience, responsibility and working through differences. Even after Kona passed away, she taught her how to grieve.
Edington didn't expect to win the contest. When she was told that her essay was selected out of 2,000 entries, she was shocked.
"Kona was a constant presence in my life," Edington said. "She was a teacher, a sister and my best friend."
For her winning essay, Edington received a $100 Amazon gift certificate and a Dell laptop.Edington is a big fan of the Oregon Humane Society. Her family adopted their current dog, Lanikai, also a black Labrador mix, from the Humane Society. Even though it's nearly two years away, she's counting down the days until she turns 16 and can volunteer there.
Because of her close relationship with Kona, Edington intends to have her own dogs when she grows up, most likely pit bulls, a breed that she said is so often misunderstood.
While she wishes she had spent more time with Kona, she hopes that Kona knows how much she loved her.
