Just two days before their biggest fundraiser of the year, a blown-apart sprinkler line poured cold water on the Alzheimer Society?s plans.
Gallons of water poured through the charity?s ceiling Tuesday morning, causing donation to their Donald Street office complex.
?Just a big deluge of water, right through everything,? Alzheimer Society CEO Sylvia Rothney said. ?We were deep in water right throughout the whole space.?
Their Winnipeg gala is happening Thursday at the Winnipeg Convention Centre. Hundreds of auction prizes ? budgeted to help bring in $260,000 for the charity ? had been stored in the office when the flood hit.
But no auction prizes were harmed in the flood thanks to the quick thinking of events manager Kim Mardero.
?When everything started to flood I made a panicked phone call to the Derksen group of companies ? I said, ?can you bring a couple of guys with trucks??? Merdero said.
Derksen, a main sponsor of the gala, is temporarily housing the charity, in addition to airing out all the prizes.
?There was some stuff that was wet and soggy. There were some gift certificates that had water damage but pretty much everything seems OK,? Merdero said.
It?s just the last-minute details that they?re now struggling with.
?Hopefully people will understand if it?s not perfect,? Merdero said of the gala.
?It?s stressful,? Rothney said. ?But these things happen. And we?re used to it, in Winnipeg: We have extreme weather. It?s OK, we?ll get through it.?
Rothney said the society has also been flooded with offers of help.
Donations can be made online at www.alzheimer.mb.ca in person at Derksen Plumbing and Heating, 125 Higgins Avenue.
