RENO, Nev. (KRNV & MyNews4.com) -- Glitter and hot glue were pouring Saturday at Kids-n-Art studio in Reno. News 4 got to spend some time with family members and friends of deployed soldiers as they hand-crafted special ornaments. "It reminds them that we're still here waiting for them and thinking about them," wife of a deployed guardsman Helena Schroeder says. Piece by piece family and friends came together to bring guardsmen in Nevada National Guard 593rd unit overseas some holiday cheer. The fabric based ornaments are all made?in the shape of a star resembling the gold star as a symbol of the National Guard. The Nevada National Guard 593rd has been deployed in Afghanistan since May and aren't expected home to until the spring. Their families know the ultimate sacrifice and they've learned to work through the separation. Family and friends join together to create?"The Family Readiness Group."? With everything that's been going on in Israel and the Gaza strip families know the middle east is an area of turmoil and with they're men and women in Afghanistan they're never far from their thoughts. "They're really trying to promote peace and democracy. It really is a humanitarian effort there, but they're doing a great job and they're doing their job and that's what's most important to us," wife of deployed guardsman and Service to Armed Forces Coordinator Kendra Kolvet says. The unit's Family Readiness Group hopes their troops feel the love from home this holiday season. "I just want them to know that although it's hard for us here at home to be away from our loved ones we're really proud of them," Schroeder says. Kids-n-Art studio donated all of the crafts and space used to make the ornaments. Everything is going to be packaged up and sent to Afghanistan in time for the holidays.
